A new project from a versatile Michigan musician

BRAD PHILLIPS returns to The Ark with his new project, The Roots Music Strings.  No stranger to The Ark stage, Brad has deep roots in the local music community as a former member of the highly acclaimed prog-Celtic band Millish, and is a regular sideman and producer for Jeff Daniels, Brian Vander Ark, The Verve Pipe, Joshua Davis, May Erlewine, Seth Bernard and many others.  He also frequently appears with Ark House Band the RFD Boys.

This new ensemble reimagines the roles of the typically divided worlds of folk bands and classical string ensembles by combining the two into one, while finding a middle ground where a new musical thoughts and ideas are shared and fostered, bridging cultural and musical divides in new exciting ways.  This new group features the talents of former Millish bandmates Jesse Mason on guitar and piano, and percussion wizard Michael Shimmin.  Fellow U of M masters graduate Andy Peck completes the rhythm section on bass and the string section includes the world-class talents of Alicia Doudna on violin, Leslie DeShazor on viola, and Katri Ervaama on cello.
Holding both bachelors (BFA Jazz Studies '07) and masters (MM Improvisation '15) degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater & Dance, Brad's love for string arranging is on full display in this ensemble.  Come and enjoy a unique evening of story telling and music ranging from upbeat original contemporary and traditional fiddle music to the heartfelt songs of Michigan and beyond, all carefully and lovingly arranged for this new, exciting ensemble.
