"Master of the Kora"
Senegalese-born, Malian-trained Mady Kouyate plays the kora, a 21-stringed harp. He was an apprentice of the great Toumani Diabate, the Malian kora player whose Ark performances in the mid-1990s still have people talking. Kouyate is a representative of the age-old tradition of the griot, using the kora to accompany sung tales that collectively make up the oral histories and collective memories of West African peoples. Mady Kouyate appears with the ensemble Fatafinan Gando ("Heat of Africa"), which includes viola, acoustic guitars, bass, drums, other percussion, and dancers.
