The San Jose Mercury News likened Vienna Teng to "a child of Chopin and Sarah McLachlan," and she took her first name in adulthood as an homage to the city of Mozart and Beethoven. Even as a newcomer to the concert stage, she wrote songs so graceful and memorable that you realized only slowly how personal and confessional they really are. Vienna has been writing songs and playing the piano since she was six, and her silvery piano stylings seem intricately woven into her soothing vocals. A few years ago Vienna Teng came to southeastern Michigan for the first time—and we fell in love. This artist has a real bond with Michigan audiences, and recently it turned out that the love affair between Vienna Teng and Michigan was mutual: she moved to Ann Arbor to study for a master's in sustainable enterprise at the U-M.
Vienna's set at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival last winter gave a hint of how this remarkable artist has moved far beyond piano pop to create something absolutely distinctive. And ever since then, we at The Ark have been working to present Vienna Teng in concert in her new home of southeastern Michigan, with the canvas of a full evening available for her musical imagination. The LA Weekly says that Vienna's "engaging voice, insightful lyrics and reflective piano-driven chamber folk pack quite the punch," and it's true—if you've never heard Vienna Teng before, she'll knock you out. If you've already experienced her, you'll know why this is going to be one of the hot tickets of the fall music scene in Michigan.
