"'One of the best songwriters of the past three decades' -- Obscure Sound"
In the 1990s, Grant-Lee Phillips was known as the voice and vision behind the critically acclaimed band Grant Lee Buffalo. He's made a transition from the aggressive guitar stomp and the often political lyrics he favored with that band, but some things haven't changed: Grant-Lee still matches gorgeous, powerful lyrics to agile 12-string guitar playing. Recording for the Rounder label, he's recorded albums ranging from the dreamy "Mobilize" to the country-ish (or Springsteen-esque) "Virginia Creeper." His latest release, "Little Moon," is a stark, sparse album of great beauty. “Because I so often find myself alone with a guitar, be it at home, on stage, in a hotel,” he reflects, “I’ve become more and more comfortable stripping away a lot of the artifice that comes with making a record. My albums are becoming more stark, more unguarded, and more vulnerable. This is the most unselfconscious record I have made –- ever.” Of Native American background, Grant-Lee is a registered member of the Creek Nation.
